Tape Release Tuesday, May 31, 2016
Brothers and Sisters, as I previously announced, the Union and Verizon have a tentative agreement. The strikers, on good faith, will return to work tomorrow. Picketing at the Verizon Wireless store at 1150 Jefferson Road is suspended immediately, pending ratification by the members. Once again the striking workers and officers from Batavia, Olean, Lockport, Hornell, and surrounding area thanked the members of Local 1170 and Rochester Labor community for your support. This agreement will be good for our members and all Communications Workers in the industry across the country.
The workers have beaten back all the concessions proposed by Verizon management at the bargaining table, as well as winning a first contract for Verizon Wireless workers and neutrality to organize new Verizon Wireless workers. I quote Local 1109’s bargaining report out of Brooklyn, NY. “ The Union preserved job security, kept call centers open in the US, increased the amount of call center work performed by Union members, reversed plant contracting initiatives, protected their pensions, gained 1,500 new Union jobs, and won a fair first contract at Verizon Wireless.
Once again I want to thank the members of 1170 and the support of the Rochester Labor community for your solidarity and walking the picket lines with the strikers who laid it on the line.
This is your President John Pusloskie, thanking you for calling your Union tape. One day longer, one day stronger.
