Tape Release Friday, May 16th, 2014
Today was a historic day across the country as thousands of fast food workers in the United States and 30 countries were striking America’s fast food restaurants in demand for higher wages. This was the largest concerted activity in recent memory by workers.
In another monumental victory for workers this week, Verizon Wireless retail store workers won an NLRB election to have the Communications Workers represent them in Brooklyn, NY. This is the first group of organized workers in Verizon Wireless in 10 years with hopes that other workers will follow suit in order to get a voice on the job.
Within Local 1170, we have reached agreement with the City of Canandaigua on new 3-year agreements for our Police Officers and Department of Public Works workers. For the first time there in 6 years, we negotiated 3% wage increases while preserving quality health care benefits including retiree benefits.
With Frontier we have three arbitrations scheduled in the Month of June concerning the following:
Force reductions and the transfer of LAC/RCV work
PBX Polling violations
Full Install HSI guarantees
In a couple of the cases, we are working to resolve with the Company short of arbitration.
Finally, our 2014 United Way campaign is complete. The final results are in and we have exceeded the $120,000.00 goal by raising more than $121,000.00! I want to thank our Coordinators Fritz Amrhein and Bill Netchke, along with our experienced solicitors and most importantly the Membership of Local 1170 who rose to the challenge and met the needs of the more than 500,000 people who use the United Way services each year. This was a tremendous effort in which you all should be proud!
Have a great weekend.
This is your President John Pusloskie thanking you for calling your Union Tape. The place where we fight for the respect you deserve.
